Restore nature on a massive scale to help stop climate breakdown

Gov Responded - 2 May 2019 Debated on - 28 Oct 2019 View Kerry McCarthy's petition debate contributions
17 Oct 2019
closed 8 months, 2 weeks ago

To avoid a climate emergency we need to act fast. Rewilding and other natural climate solutions can draw millions of tonnes of CO2 out of the air through restoring and protecting our living systems. We call on the UK government to make a bold financial and political commitment to nature's recovery.

Demand the EU & UN sanction Brazil to halt increased deforestation of the Amazon

Gov Responded - 30 Sep 2019 Debated on - 7 Oct 2019 View Kerry McCarthy's petition debate contributions
24 Jan 2020
closed 5 months, 1 week ago

The government of Brazil led by Bolsonaro favour the development of the Amazon rainforest over conservation, escalating deforestation. Deforestation threatens indigenous populations who live in the forest, loss of a precious and complex ecosystem and a vital carbon store that slows global warming.

Children & young adults with CF endure lifelong suffering & early death. They need Orkambi and other precision medicines as they are developed. Sufferers in the EU, US & Australia can access the drugs, but not the UK. Hundreds have died in the 3yrs since these drugs were licensed.

Make 'netting' hedgerows to prevent birds from nesting a criminal offence.

Developers, and other interested parties are circumventing laws protecting birds by 'netting' hedgerows to prevent birds from nesting.

This facilitates the uprooting of hedgerows which aid biodiversity and provide the only remaining nesting sites for birds, whose numbers are in sharp decline.

Increase funding for schools

Gov Responded - 5 Feb 2019 Debated on - 4 Mar 2019 View Kerry McCarthy's petition debate contributions
19 May 2019
closed 1 year, 1 month ago

Schools are having to make difficult choices on how to spend their limited funding as their income has not kept pace with the rise in costs since 2010. All schools are working very hard to “make ends meet” but this is becoming increasingly difficult and verging on almost impossible.

In response to the problem of an ever-increasing amount of plastic waste polluting our environment, we need to make supermarkets offer an option of no packaging or eco-friendly packaging for each item of fresh fruit and vegetables they sell.

Prevent avoidable deaths by making autism/learning disability training mandatory

My son Oliver was only 18 when he died in hospital on 11 Nov 2016. I believe his death could have been prevented if his doctors and nurses had received mandatory training. He had autism and a mild learning disability, and they weren't trained to understand how to make reasonable adjustments for him.

Ban the sale of animal fur in the UK.

Gov Responded - 28 Nov 2017 Debated on - 4 Jun 2018 View Kerry McCarthy's petition debate contributions

closed 2 years, 3 months ago

Fur farming was banned in England and Wales in 2000, followed by Scotland in 2002. However fur products can still be legally imported from other countries and sold here in the UK. Much of this fur comes from countries that have very weak or no animal welfare laws at all.

Ban the sale of puppies by pet shops & all commercial 3rd party dealers.

Gov Responded - 20 Mar 2018 Debated on - 21 May 2018 View Kerry McCarthy's petition debate contributions
1 Sep 2018
closed 1 year, 10 months ago

Removing puppies for sale from litter & mum often creates sick, traumatised, dysfunctional dogs. Puppies should be seen with their mum & transporting them to a different place for sale harms welfare. Regulating commercial 3rd party sales is ineffective to prevent harm & a ban is therefore necessary.

End the export of live farm animals after Brexit.

Gov Responded - 16 Oct 2017 Debated on - 26 Feb 2018 View Kerry McCarthy's petition debate contributions
19 Mar 2018
closed 2 years, 3 months ago

The transport of live animals exported from the UK causes immense suffering. This trade is governed by EU law, not the UK Government.

The Government should plan legislation to ban the export of live farm animals in favour of a carcass only trade and introduce this as soon as we leave the EU.
