Written Question
Trade Remedies
Wednesday 25th April 2018

Asked by: Andrew Gwynne (Labour - Denton and Reddish)

Question to the Department for International Trade:

To ask the Secretary of State for International Trade, pursuant to the Answer of 22 March to Question 132109 on trade remedies, if he will publish the schedule of meetings which took place at each of the 60 visits.

Answered by Greg Hands - Minister of State (Department for Business and Trade)

The Secretary of State for International Trade and his Ministerial team undertake regular visits overseas to promote trade and investment. The programmes typically include bilateral meetings with counterparts to discuss trade cooperation and meetings with business leaders and investors.

It would be disproportionate to publish the detail of each of the 60 visits, but by way of example, the Secretary of State led a delegation of more than 50 UK businesses to China, during the Prime Minister's visit. During the visit he witnessed the signing of a number of commercial deals, addressed business leaders at a Digital China event and attended a China-UK Business Forum.

The Department for International Trade do publish details of Ministerial visits before and during visits through press releases and social media.

Question to the Department for International Trade:

To ask the Secretary of State for International Trade, pursuant to the Answer of 27 February 2018 to Question 127970, what meetings he, or Ministers in his Department, have had with representatives from (a) Australia, (b) EU, (c) Canada and (d) the US on their trade remedies system.

Answered by Greg Hands - Minister of State (Department for Business and Trade)

The Government is a supporter of free trade. However, free trade does not mean trade without rules. An important part of our rounded trade policy is that we put in place a trade remedies framework to protect domestic industry from injury as a result of dumping or subsidy, or unforeseen surges in imports.

DIT Ministers have made a combined number of 60 visits to Australia, USA, Canada and EU countries and have had wide ranging discussions on a range of topics including future trade policy options.
