Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask Her Majesty's Government, further to the Written Answer by Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon on 12 December 2018 (HL11891), whether they have raised with the government of the United Arab Emirates (1) the retrospective application of Law 37 to Ryan Cornelius, (2) the principle of double jeopardy following his additional sentence of 20 years in prison, and (3) whether his imprisonment is in breach of the law of the UAE; and if not, why not.

​As I said in my written answer HL12396 on 4 January, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has sought clarity from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the United Arab Emirates regarding the terms of Mr Ryan Cornelius' continued detention on a number of occasions. We did so again on 24 January. Any response received will be shared with Mr Cornelius' family.

​The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has sought clarity from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) regarding the terms of Mr Ryan Cornelius' continued detention on a number of occasions. Most recently (10 December), we asked the UAE to respond to concerns raised that Mr Cornelius was being denied certain privileges.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Ministers of State raises consular cases in the United Arab Emirates through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where a case does require official action and the FCO is asked to raise it.

Her Majesty's Government what representations they have made to the government of Dubai to ensure the prompt release of Ryan Cornelius from prison.

Our Embassy in Dubai has sought clarity from the Government of Dubai as to why Ryan Cornelius remains in detention. We will continue to raise his case with the authorities.
