Question to the Ministry of Justice:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, when his Department plans to respond to an email from Lesley Taunton dated 18 October 2022.
Answered by Mike Freer - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Ministry of Justice)
The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) have assured me that they will be providing a response to both Sir Oliver’s correspondence to OPG dated 18 October, and Ms Taunton’s correspondence by 28 November.
I apologise for the delay in full responses to their correspondence being provided. OPG is currently experiencing backlogs in processing Lasting Power of Attorneys (LPAs) and the corresponding increase in correspondence has had an impact on OPG’s ability to respond to complaints within the target. OPG understands the importance of customers receiving timely responses to complaints. To improve the service OPG is recruiting more staff to process LPAs and to respond to complaints, carrying out overtime and making improvements to internal processes. We are pressing ahead with plans to digitise LPA applications, making the process simpler and quicker for customers.

Question to the Ministry of Justice:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many and what proportion of claims made through the online money claims service have been struck out since that service was launched; and what the corresponding figures are for money claims under £10,000 filed at court in the same time period.
Answered by Lucy Frazer - Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
This information requested could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. As the Online Civil Money Claims service progresses and supports the complete journey for civil money claims, it will be able to capture a much wider range of data about the stages that cases reach and the variation of outcomes.

Question to the Ministry of Justice:
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what progress he has made on plans for paperless working in the courts.
Answered by Mike Penning
Improving the use of digital technology is key to modernising our justice system in England and Wales. We are reforming the Criminal Justice System to reduce reliance on paper both in the administration of our courts, and in the courtroom.
Our HMCTS Reform Programme will build on this foundation and ensure that the justice system makes better use of technology to provide easier access to a more responsive and swifter system.
