Regulate Shift lengths and minimum rest periods for Emergency Service Workers.

The hours that aircrew can work and the minimum rest time required between duties is, quite rightly, heavily regulated. The Circadian Rhythm and it’s affect on concentration and fatigue is considered. Similarly for our Haulage industry. So why no such consideration for our Emergency Services?

We can be at the end of a 12 hr shift and yet still be expected to respond to emergencies. Our decisions, clinical or other, will often be life or death decisions. Our rest time is reduced. Our days off cancelled. Our shifts random and with no consideration to the circadian rhythm. Generally, adrenaline carries us through those. Not so on the drive home though. The number of RTC’s, some fatal, is rising. The MH of crew declining. Why are we not regulated properly. How many need to die?
