Provide funding and guidance for collection of food waste by local authorities

We want the Government to provide dedicated funding for collection of food waste, and issue clear guidance to support local authorities in the collection of food waste. Currently too much food waste is landfilled and decays, creating greenhouse emissions that threaten the UK's 2050 net zero target

Food waste makes up a shocking proportion of the material in our rubbish bins and mostly ends up in landfill.

The Environment Act 2021 clearly sets out the expectation that local authorities should collect food waste weekly and unmixed with other waste streams.

Dedicated funding, and guidance, from DEFRA to implement this legislation has been absent for 4 years. This is urgently required for waste collection authorities to put this legislation into practice.
