Regulated healthcare professionals work within a defined scope of practice and limits of competence, aligned to an established curriculum. Their detailed scope of practice in a given setting is circumscribed by their supervisor and/or employer.

The regulatory bodies set the standards of training and education required to gain entry to their registers and the standards of professional conduct and performance expected of registrants.

If a regulated health professional practises outside of their competence or their scope of practice, or breaches their code of conduct, the regulator has a statutory duty to take action to protect patient safety.
