The United Kingdom National Screening Committee (UK NSC) has commenced work to look at the evidence to screen the over 65 population for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) as part of its regular three year review cycle. It is expected that a public consultation will be open in 2018, which will welcome input from stakeholders and members of the public.

In response to concerns raised in the UK NSC’s 2014 review about optimising clinical management, Public Health England’s (PHE) National Cardiovascular Intelligence Network has contributed to the development of AF intelligence packs to help commissioners to identify where improvements can be made to reduce the risk of stroke by improving the detection and treatment of AF. In addition PHE leads a national AF-related stroke prevention programme which aims to increase detection in line with expected prevalence and ensure people with AF are optimally treated and managed.
