Revenue and Customs: Debt Collection

Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what estimate HM Revenue and Customs has made of the (a) cost of employing and (b) projected cash to bank that may be generated by employing additional collectors in debt resolution teams.

In 2016-17, HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC’s) debt management staff collected £36.2 billion. If it is assumed that there are 251 working days in a year then this equates to roughly £143 million per working day. HMRC does not hold the further estimate requested.
