Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what estimate his Department has made of the number of deaths by antimicrobial resistance in England in each of the last five years.

A commonly quoted estimate for the number of deaths caused by an antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infection is 5,000 deaths in England each year.

The estimate is also consistent with the Final Report and Recommendations from The Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, chaired by Jim O’Neill. The Review estimated the annual number of deaths caused by AMR infections worldwide to be of the order of 700,000. The report is available at:
