Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how much the NHS received in income from private patients in each of the last 10 years for which figures are available.
The question has been interpreted as requesting detail regarding the level of income generated from the treatment of private patients by National Health Service providers. The term ‘NHS providers’ incorporates both NHS trusts and NHS foundation trusts (FTs).
The income generated from the treatment of private patients by NHS providers is reported as a separate line item in the Department’s Annual Report and Accounts (ARA), notes to the accounts.
The NHS trust and FT figures which compose the provider totals given in the ARA are as follows:
Year | NHS trusts (£000s) | NHS FTs (£000s) | NHS Provider Total (£000s) |
2010-11 | 175,399 | 253,076 | 428,745 |
2011-12 | 177,312 | 275,179 | 452,491 |
2012-13 | 127,197 | 351,452 | 478,649 |
2013-14 | 120,818 | 380,890 | 501,708 |
2014-15 | 130,217 | 395,921 | 526,138 |
2015-16 | 123,445 | 434,749 | 558,194 |
2016-17 | 121,929 | 462,054 | 583,983 |
Prior to 2010-11 the Department’s ARA did not report ‘income from private patients’ as a specific line item and thus comparable information for prior years is unavailable.
