Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what estimate he has made of the total cost of litigation damages paid to prisoners in England and Wales in each year since 2010.

The requested information prior to 2016-2017 cannot be obtained without incurring disproportionate cost. The total cost of litigation damages paid to prisoners in England and Wales in each completed financial year from 2016-17 is provided in the table below.

We successfully defend two-thirds of compensation cases brought by prisoners and always make sure debts to victims and the courts are paid before any payment is made to the offender.
