Motorway Service Areas: Electric Vehicles

(asked on 28th March 2022) - View Source

Question to the Department for Transport:

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether the installation of rapid charge points in all motorway service stations in England by the end of 2023 will be funded solely from the Rapid Charging Fund or whether other funds will be used; when he plans to publish a detailed plan for that rollout; and what steps he plans to take to help ensure that (a) cost and (b) time to connect new charge points to the electricity system do not serve as barriers to meeting that target.

The £950 million Rapid Charging Fund aims to future-proof electrical grid capacity at service areas on motorways and major A-roads, to ensure that there is a rapid-charging network ready to meet the long-term consumer demand for electric vehicle chargepoints ahead of need.

The primary route to deliver the 2023 targets will be through industry-led and funded activities, including upgrading electricity network capacity when necessary.
