The Government has been in regular discussions with stakeholders including industry, NGO’s and other States. We recognise that some ports and States are concerned about the potential impact of large numbers of ships using exhaust gas cleaning systems and consequently, have restricted or banned the use of these systems in some waters.

Along with other European States, we have submitted a paper to the next session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 74), requesting that a work programme be established to consider the evidence on this issue, and amend the current IMO Guidelines if this proves necessary.
