To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what discussions (a) he and (b) officials of his Department have had with Royal Commonwealth Ex-Service League on the gratuity payments made to African soldiers made at the end of the Second World War; and whether his Department has information on the number of veterans who were subject to the differential pay.

Neither I, nor my officials, have had conversations with the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Service League on the gratuity payments made to African soldiers at the end of the Second World War. Following independence, the governments of ex-British colonies usually assumed responsibility for service records relating to their armed forces. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office is working closely with colleagues across government to gather information on this issue.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many trained arms control inspectors are employed by Her Majesty’s Government.

The only full-time inspectors employed by Her Majesty's Government are at the Joint Arms Control Implementation Group (JACIG). JACIG has 16 trained inspectors qualified to support Treaty-related inspections, evaluation and verification for Conventional Arms Control Treaties. Their emphasis is on the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe; Vienna Document 2011 and Open Skies. JACIG also observes inspections under the 1995 Dayton Accords peace agreement.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, when he plans to publish the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science study on the effect of electric fishing in UK waters.

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) completed a desktop review on pulse technology entitled “The impacts of flatfish pulse trawling: evidence review, data gaps and future research”. The report is subject to a peer review process which is due to be completed by the end of December. The finalised report is therefore expected to be ready for publication early in the New Year.

We have also commissioned some original science for future research with a study including at-sea comparisons of pulse and conventional beam trawl impacts.
