Written Question
Defence Equipment: Lost Property and Theft
Wednesday 31st January 2024

Asked by: Sarah Jones (Labour - Croydon Central)

Question to the Ministry of Defence:

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how much military equipment of each equipment type has been (a) lost and (b) stolen in each year since 2015.

Answered by Andrew Murrison - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Ministry of Defence)

The Ministry of Defence has historically responded to Freedom of Information Requests (FOIs), answering the following three questions:

1. How many weapons (by type) and explosive munitions for which the Department has responsibility have been recorded as (a) lost and (b) stolen in [year]?

2. Please provide a list of all stolen items, value and location of the theft of all items that were recorded stolen in the [year] calendar year.

3. How many department computers, laptops, memory sticks were lost/stolen by month since January [year]?

The responses have included military equipment reported lost/stolen in addition to other items but are limited to only those cases reported to the centralised reporting functions concerned with Security and Fraud/Theft, Bribery and Corruption.

The following are the links to those years that the published FOI requests can be located on GOV.UK:

Written Question
Department for Transport: Electronic Purchasing Card Solution
Monday 19th December 2022

Asked by: Emily Thornberry (Labour - Islington South and Finsbury)

Question to the Department for Transport:

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, with reference to his Department’s publication of electronic purchasing card spending over £500 for November 2021, what items of wellbeing sports equipment were purchased from Argos Ltd on 1 November 2021; and for what purpose those items were purchased.

Answered by Jesse Norman

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has a small wellbeing budget to support the mental, emotional and physical health of its staff. It used part of this budget to purchase a rowing machine to supplement equipment donated by staff.

Written Question
Rowing
Tuesday 26th May 2020

Asked by: Karl McCartney (Conservative - Lincoln)

Question to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport:

To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what recent meetings he has had with representatives of rowing organisations; and what the outcome was of those meetings.

Answered by Nigel Huddleston - Financial Secretary (HM Treasury)

I am having regular discussions with sector and industry bodies to understand the full impact of COVID-19 on sport and how the government can best provide support. This includes a fortnightly meeting with sporting organisations.

Written Question
British Rowing
Monday 19th November 2018

Asked by: Royston Smith (Conservative - Southampton, Itchen)

Question to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport:

To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, whether his Department has made an assessment of the Rowing Association's ability to trade and work with its counterpart clubs in EU member states after the UK leaves the EU.

Answered by Mims Davies - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Work and Pensions)

The government has outlined our aspiration to negotiate an agreement with the European Union on our future economic partnership that will include a UK-EU free trade area for goods, and a comprehensive package for services. We will also seek to negotiate a mobility framework with the EU that supports businesses to provide services, and allows people to travel freely without a visa for tourism and temporary business activity. Subject to the negotiations, we expect these measures to minimise barriers to UK businesses, including sports organisations such as British Rowing, in trading and working with their counterparts in the EU after we leave.

Written Question
Rugby: Museums and Galleries
Tuesday 22nd March 2016

Asked by: Lord Smith of Leigh (Labour - Life peer)

Question to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport:

To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they will support the establishment of a National Museum of Rugby League in the Northern Powerhouse area.

Answered by Baroness Neville-Rolfe - Minister of State (Cabinet Office)

There are a number of independent sporting museums in the UK based on individual sports including rowing, tennis and Rugby Union. Arts Council England supports a Subject Specialist Network for sporting museums that promotes and shares best practice and expertise in the field. There are currently no plans to fund a National Museum of Rugby League in the Northern Powerhouse area, however this Department is investing in the game of Rugby League, through the £17.5m that that Rugby League will receive from Sport England between 2013 and 2017 and the £100k support for a bid for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup; announced in the Budget.

Written Question
Viridor Credits
Wednesday 9th December 2015

Asked by: Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb (Green Party - Life peer)

Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask Her Majesty’s Government how the grant from Viridor Credits to Twickenham Rowing Club was audited by ENTRUST, and what assessment they have made of the environmental objectives that grant fulfils.

Answered by Lord O'Neill of Gatley

The Landfill Communities Fund is a tax credit scheme. It allows landfill operators to gain a tax credit against 90% of the voluntary donations they make to environmental bodies for spending on certain prescribed objectives.

The prescribed objectives include:

  • the restoration of a building of historic interest or place of religious worship; and
  • the maintenance or improvement of a public amenity;

within the vicinity of a landfill site.

ENTRUST, the independent regulator of the Landfill Communities Fund assesses and approves applications for project funding to ensure they meet the objectives of the scheme. ENTRUST also carries out a programme of assurance under which a cross-section of projects are selected for audit to ensure they meet the prescribed objectives, and that funds are spent compliantly.
