The Government was pleased to support the Protection from Redundancy (Pregnancy and Family Leave) Act, which received Royal Assent on 24th May 2023. Regulations under this Act to deliver additional redundancy protection for pregnant women and new parents were laid on 11th December.

As part of our efforts to communicate the changes which are being introduced under the Protection from Redundancy (Pregnancy and Family Leave) Act 2023, the Government will be producing guidance. The guidance will be published in the New Year to support the commencement of the regulations.

The Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS) has been the industry-recognised scaffold training scheme for over 40 years. Our standards of health and safety protections are among the highest in the world and there is no reason for that to change.

To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, with reference to the Law Commission report entitled Employment Law Hearing Structures: Report, published April 2020, what progress he has made on extending the time limit for all employment tribunal claims to six months.

The Government continues to keep of Employment Tribunal time limits under review.

Any decision to extend Employment Tribunal time limits will need to take account of the effect on the wider justice system, as well as the effect on Acas, who are responsible for conducting early conciliation.

To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, what recent assessment he has made of the potential merits of (a) implementing the Law Commission’s April 2020 recommendations and (b) extending the time limit for all Employment Tribunal claims to 6 months.

The Government welcomed the Law Commission’s report on Employment Law Hearing Structures and is keeping the recommendations made, under consideration. While the time limit for bringing most claims is three months, tribunals have the discretion to provide extensions. We believe that the current approach, taken on a case by basis, is the most proportionate at this time


The Government continues to look closely at extending the time limit for bringing Equality Act 2010 based cases to the employment tribunal and are looking to assess the impact of such a change on all aspects of the Employment Tribunal System. Any decision will need to take account of the effect on the wider justice system and on the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).
