Written Question
Asylum: Finance
Thursday 21st June 2018

Asked by: Lisa Nandy (Labour - Wigan)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what plans he has to improve the methodology for calculating asylum support rates.

Answered by Caroline Nokes

The most recent assessment of the adequacy of the asylum support rates is set out in a report published in March 2018, which can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/report-on-review-of-cash-allowance-paid-to-asylum-seekers.

The methodology used in the assessment takes account of the views of stakeholders and has been approved by the courts as lawful. There are no plans to change the methodology, but a further review of the rates will take place later this year and stakeholders will be consulted in the normal way.

No assessment has taken place about the impact of the time people spend on asylum support on the integration of new refugees. At the point those receiving support are granted refugee status they are able to take employment or apply for mainstream benefits.

The Integrated Communities Strategy Green Paper sets out our commitment to working with civil society and other partners to increase the integration support for refugees in the United Kingdom. The consultation on the Green Paper closed on 5 June and we are considering the responses.

Asylum: Children
Monday 24th April 2017

Asked by: Lisa Nandy (Labour - Wigan)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what specialist mental health support is provided to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in the UK.

Answered by Robert Goodwill

The Home Office notify the relevant local authority of the arrival of any unaccompanied asylum seeking child in the UK so that they can consider the best course of action and necessary support for that specific child.

If at any stage of the asylum process, Home Office staff have welfare or safeguarding concerns about a child, including concerns about their mental health, they immediately refer the child to the local authority children’s service to consider the best course of action.
