VE Day marked the formal acceptance by the Allies of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender in the Second World War. The Trades Union Congress called for the 75th anniversary to be given a separate bank holiday. Although the origins of the May Day holiday are thought to lie in a Roman festival to mark the start of summer, in modern times the bank holiday has celebrated the struggle for workers’ rights.
