Enhance maternity leave to be at full pay for 6 months

The government plans to enhance maternity leave for cabinet ministers to be at full pay for 6 months, compared to current statutory maternity pay of 90% of pay for 6 weeks then £151.20 or 90% of average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for 33 weeks. This should apply to all new mothers.

The government has realised that current statutory maternity pay is not sufficient for a cabinet minister to adequately support her family whilst undertaking caring duties for her newborn child. These difficulties are faced by all new mothers, who are often torn between caring for their child and returning to work early.

In recognition of this the government should extend this enhanced maternity pay to all mothers giving birth to, or adopting, a child.
