Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, how much was paid to HMRC in tax penalties for (a) underpayment and (b) late payment in the period between 1 January 2022 and 1 January 2023.

Below is a table providing the total value of penalties issued (rounded to the nearest £ million) and the number of penalties issued (rounded to the nearest thousand) between 2019-20 to 2021/22.

In addition, our penalty data is reported by financial, not calendar, years, so have provided data for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years.
