Question to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, whether he plans to update building regulations to require new homes to be designed to reduce overheating during periods of extreme heat.

Building Regulations Part O, introduced in 2021 and in force since June 2022, already requires new residential buildings to be designed to mitigate the risk of overheating, including by reducing unwanted solar heat gains and enabling the removal of excess heat

The Government has also committed to a full technical review of Part O to ensure it remains effective and proportionate, and to consider whether changes to the standard are necessary. No decisions on changes have been made.
