Question to the Department for Work and Pensions:

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, what steps his Department is taking to mitigate the risks of job displacement caused by increased uptake of artificial intelligence in the workplace.

AI has potentially transformative benefits for the economy and wider society, and the Government is doing all it can to ensure that the United Kingdom is at the forefront of this technological transition.

We are taking action now to shape the AI transition in a way that benefits workers and the economy:

• We have established the AI Economics Institute to provide world-leading research on AI’s economic impacts so government can respond to labour market shocks.

• Every UK adult is eligible for free AI upskilling via the AI Skills Boost, with the ambition of upskilling 10 million workers in AI skills by 2030.

• We are supporting over 400,000 young people obtaining TechFirst AI training, and we are developing apprenticeships schemes and Jobs Guarantee AI placements to ensure AI creates opportunities for the next generation.

AI is the defining opportunity of our generation. The action we are taking will ensure we can make the most of opportunities for economic growth, job creation and productivity, whilst supporting individuals during this change.
