Question to the Department for International Trade

To ask the Secretary of State for International Trade, if he will make an assessment of the potential merits of a Commonwealth free trade area after the UK leaves the EU.

Answer (Sir George Hollingbery)

The Government is strongly committed to encouraging trade between Commonwealth members, working with our friends and allies in the Commonwealth to remove barriers and liberalise the global trading environment. However, it would not be possible to agree a Commonwealth free trade area given that some Commonwealth members are also members of the European Union.
