Question to the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade:

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, what steps he plans to take to phase out the use of animals in scientific research.

The Government is taking forward a range of measures through the Replacing Animals in Science strategy, published in November 2025, to accelerate the development, validation and uptake of alternative methods. Delivery is underway, supported by investment in new research infrastructure, regulatory reforms and strengthened collaboration across Government, regulators, industry and academia. Existing legislation already requires animals to be used only where no validated alternative exists. The Government’s long-term vision is to eliminate the use of animals in science in all but exceptional circumstances, with progress reported through future delivery updates and key performance indicators.
