Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) is designed to ensure that electric vehicle drivers make a fair contribution for their road usage, as petrol and diesel drivers do through fuel duty. Electric cars will pay half the equivalent fuel duty rate paid by the average petrol or diesel car, with a reduced rate for plug-in hybrids.

eVED will apply to all UK-registered electric and plug-in hybrid cars from April 2028, including vehicles purchased before the Vehicle Excise Duty exemption for zero-emission vehicles ended in April 2025. The Government has no plans to introduce an exemption based on when a vehicle was purchased.
