Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, pursuant to the Answer of 25 June 2026 to Question 10241 on Births: Medical Records, for what reason her Department does not plan to make the recording of SNOMED codes mandatory across all births.

Decisions on whether data items should be mandatory are taken with consideration of clinical need, data quality, implementation feasibility, and impact on frontline services.

The Maternity Services Data Set allows providers to submit relevant SNOMED coded information, where clinically appropriate.
