AI is already regulated in the UK through existing laws and regulators, covering data protection, competition, product safety, and online safety. For example, data protection legislation applies to personal data processing regardless of the technology used. We have outlawed AI models generating child sexual abuse material and criminalised intimate deepfakes. We are also examining how the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill can respond to emerging AI risks to essential services, such as through developing a voluntary reporting framework on near-miss incidents. But we should not assume that the existing framework will always be sufficient as AI capabilities develop. The safety of the British public is a non-negotiable priority. Where new protections are needed, we will act, legislating wherever necessary. Any future measures will be evidence-based and focused on the risks we need to address.
