The UK has banned imports of crude oil and refined products directly from Russia since December 2022.

On 20 May 2026, the Government went further than any previous ban by prohibiting imports of refined oil products made from Russian crude in third countries. This further action is being phased in with a temporary licence to allow continued imports of diesel and jet fuel refined in third countries during a strict transition period; it is reviewed every two weeks and will expire by 1 January 2027 at the latest. The Government will continue to work with international partners to close routes for Russian oil and cut off revenues funding Putin's illegal war.
