Question to the Department for Transport:

To ask His Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to regulate e-bikes.

Only e-bikes which comply with the requirements of the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle Regulations 1983 are legal to use on the roads. This includes their maximum assisted speed being limited to 15.5mph and the maximum power of their electric motor being limited to 250 watts.

Where these requirements are not complied with, the e-bike is classed as a motor vehicle and must be approved and registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency, taxed and insured in order to be used on the roads. The rider must also wear a safety helmet and hold a driving licence.
