Passing loops are situated on single line sections of the West of England main line at Tisbury, Gillingham, Chard, Axminster and Honiton, allowing trains travelling in opposite directions to pass each other. Additionally, there is a ten-mile (16km) section of double track immediately west of Templecombe station as far as Yeovil Junction.
