Question
To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of introducing regulatory controls over addictive social media content algorithms in the UK.
The government recognises concerns about the impact of recommendation systems on users’ online experiences and has already committed to taking action to address this.
In July, we announced that social media companies will be required to switch-off personalised recommender feeds by default for 16- and 17-year-olds, giving older teenagers greater control over their online experiences.
Through Protecting What Matters, the government’s social cohesion action plan, we also committed to exploring options to give users greater control over their algorithmic feeds.
