Question to the HM Treasury:
To ask His Majesty's Government, further to the Written Answer by Lord Pitt-Watson on 19 October (HL3858), whether they will provide details of any gold currently held in Bank of England vaults that bears Soviet or other Communist state insignia, including (1) the quantity of such gold, and (2) the countries concerned.
Gold accepted into the Bank of England's vaults must meet London Good Delivery standards and comply with applicable sanctions - it is not classified by its markings. The Bank of England does not share information on which foreign governments and central banks it holds gold reserves on behalf of as this would contradict their customer confidentiality obligations.
