In July 2024, the government established the independent Curriculum and Assessment Review. The final report, published in November 2025, makes several recommendations about mathematics, including that the government retains the amount and type of content in the key stage 1 to 3 curriculum, but re-sequences topics so pupils can master them deeply, with opportunities for more complex problem solving. The government accepted these recommendations and committed to deepen pupils’ understanding, including via non-routine problem solving. Work is underway to redraft national curriculum programmes of study and subject content for the first group of GCSEs in response to these recommendations. The department expects there will be a public consultation on the proposals in due course.
