Home Office: Food
Asked by: John Hayes (Conservative - South Holland and The Deepings)
Wednesday 22nd May 2024

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what his Department's policy is on the procurement of (a) food and (b) drinks produced in Britain for use in its canteens and restaurants.

Answered by Chris Philp - Minister of State (Home Office)

Catering services for our canteens and restaurants are provided by our Facilities Management providers on a regional basis. This service provides sustainable and ethical food, adhering to government buying standards.

This compromises of several categories, which include:

  • Production standards
  • Traceability
  • Authenticity
  • Origin of meat & diary
  • Animal welfare
  • Eggs
  • Palm oil
  • Fish and seasonal produce.
Agriculture: Animal Welfare
Asked by: Henry Smith (Conservative - Crawley)
Tuesday 21st May 2024

Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps he is taking to end the use of cages in farming.

Answered by Mark Spencer - Minister of State (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs)

We have delivered an ambitious legislative programme since the publication of the Action Plan for Animal Welfare, which will deliver significant improvements for animals in the UK and abroad. We are firmly committed to maintaining our strong track record on animal welfare and to delivering continued improvements, both in the course of this Parliament and beyond.

Mindful of the challenges facing the sector, we are not consulting on cage reforms. The market is already driving the move away from using cages for laying hen production. Egg producers and consumers should rightly have pride in the quality of British eggs, with about 75% coming from free range, barn and organic production systems. The UK also has a significant outdoor pig sector with 40% of the national sow breeding herd farrowing freely on outdoor units with no option for confinement.

We continue to work with the farming industry to maintain and enhance our high standards of animal welfare. The Animal Health and Welfare Pathway, part of our domestic agricultural policy, supports farmers to produce healthier, higher welfare animals. The Government’s welfare priorities for the Pathway include supporting producers to transition away from confinement systems.

Department for Work and Pensions: Food
Asked by: John Hayes (Conservative - South Holland and The Deepings)
Monday 20th May 2024

Question to the Department for Work and Pensions:

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, what his Department's policy is on the procurement of (a) food and (b) drinks produced in Britain for use in its canteens and restaurants.

Answered by Paul Maynard - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Work and Pensions)

The DWP’s FM supplier has investigated the sourcing of food and drink in its canteens and restaurants. They confirm that all food and drink has to meet the Government Buying Standards, as well as their catering sub-contractor’s (Compass) own non-negotiable standards that have to be met in relation to animal welfare and quality assurance.

In order to achieve this, Compass have a set of strict food sourcing standards that their suppliers have to adhere to. These are split up between:

• Dairy and eggs

• Fruit and Veg

• Animal Products

• Fish and Seafood

• Meat sourcing

• Grocery and Savoury

For instance, for dairy liquid milk they state it must be from British Origin and red tractor assurance. All our eggs are cage free (liquid and shell). All shell eggs are from the UK.

Compass have set the net zero target of 2030, so have banned air freight in their business.

Petitions

End the Culling of Male Chicks in the UK

Petition Rejected - 11 Signatures

Culling male chicks for not laying eggs contradicts societal values. Companies like Seleggt have demonstrated that non-invasive methods like in-ovo sexing exist and they offer a humane alternative. Mandating their use in the UK promotes ethical standards in animal agriculture.

This petition was rejected on 21st May 2024 as it duplicates an existing petition
