Question
to the Department for Transport:
To ask His Majesty's Government what plans they have, if any, to allow rail tickets issued by one operator to be accepted by a different operator on the same route; and whether arrangements to achieve this will be introduced in time for the next East Coast Mainline timetable.
Answered by Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill
- Minister of State (Department for Transport)
We are committed to simplifying the over complicated fares and ticketing system. Under our plans to bring train operators into a publicly owned Great British Railways, we will be taking a fresh look at single operator fares, so that we can create a simpler fares and ticketing system for passengers.
On the East Coast Main Line, London North-Eastern Railway (LNER) have ensured that its advance and 70-minute flex tickets are accepted by other relevant train operators, to allow passengers to complete their journeys.
As announced in December by the Department for Transport Operator, LNER, Northern and TransPennine Trains will allow customers to travel on each other’s services at no extra cost during any short-notice and on-the-day disruptions.

Integrated Rail Plan: Northern Powerhouse Area
"I agree with the objectives of the integrated rail plan but, as far as the east and north-east of England are concerned, the plan fails to meet them. HS2 was never going to do much for the north-east and now, cut back, it will do virtually nothing for it. The …..."Lord Beith - View Speech

Railways: East Coast Main Line
"My Lords, the timetable was withdrawn by Network Rail because it could not be operated reliably on the existing infrastructure and because there was such a hostile public reaction from areas that faced fewer trains, longer journeys and no improvement in connectivity across the north. Question
to the Department for Transport:
To ask Her Majesty's Government, further to the reply by Baroness Vere of Norbiton on 15 July (HL Deb, col 1945), what were the principal elements in the estimated £60 million a year in increased revenue from the operation of the proposed new East Coast Mainline timetable.
Answered by Baroness Vere of Norbiton
Under the proposed timetable London North Eastern Railway (LNER) passenger numbers are expected to increase as a result of shorter journey times between key destinations, supporting the Government’s decarbonisation plans. It will also enable the addition of 30 per cent more trains per hour and these additional services would provide a significant increase in capacity creating opportunities for increased revenue.

"My Lords, the consultation document to which the Minister has referred says that the structure of the timetable for May 2022 is fixed, which leaves little opportunity for change to be made. "My Lords, what the north-east needs is not an underground line but investment in the East Coast Main Line, which, according to LNER, does not have the capacity even to accommodate the service that it provided up to 2019.
