Written Question
Suicide: Beachy Head
Monday 31st October 2016

Asked by: Lord Bellingham (Conservative - Life peer)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what discussions his Department has had with Eastbourne Borough Council on steps to deter or prevent people from taking their own life on Beachy Head.

Answered by Baroness Blackwood of North Oxford

We have not had any discussions with Eastbourne Borough Council about Beachy Head as a place used by people to take their own life. Local authorities are responsible for local suicide prevention by working with local agencies to implement local suicide prevention plans.

Public Health England (PHE) published guidance in 2015, ‘Preventing suicides in public places: A practice resource’, to support local areas taking action in places known to be used for suicide:

PHE also published refreshed guidance on 25 October, ‘Local suicide prevention planning: a practice resource’, to support local areas to implement multi-agency suicide prevention plans which will bring together all local agencies to work collaboratively to prevent suicide:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, how many unplanned admissions took place in North West Norfolk last year; and what estimate he has made of the number of such admissions this year.

Written Question
Care Homes: Finance
Wednesday 9th December 2015

Asked by: Lord Bellingham (Conservative - Life peer)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, when he next expects to meet representatives of the care home industry to discuss local authority funding of care homes; and if he will make a statement.

Answered by Alistair Burt

I regularly meet with representatives of the care home industry to discuss topics including local authority funding of care homes, and will continue to do so.

The Government has shown clear commitment to the adult social care sector, as evidenced during the Spending Review in which local authorities have been given access to £3.5 billion of new support for social care by 2019/20.

Nurses: Training
Wednesday 9th December 2015

Asked by: Lord Bellingham (Conservative - Life peer)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what plans he has to amend the annual limit set on nurse educational places; and if he will make a statement.

Answered by Ben Gummer

From 2017 we are removing the limit on the number of students that can study nursing. This reform is expected to enable universities to provide up to 10,000 additional nursing and other health professional training places over this Parliament. This will open up opportunities for applicants which universities have previously been forced to turn down.
