"My local council has similar policies in place, but there is a real problem coming down the track with the disappearance of the revenue support grant. When that goes, there will surely have to be some form of top-slicing or maybe a ring-fenced precept for local authorities such as my …..."

Coastal Erosion

"My hon. Friend is being incredibly generous in giving way. My local authority has similar problems, but it faces a structural funding deficit. The Minister’s Department and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government must consider making some form of ring-fenced precept available to local councils, and perhaps there …..."

Middle Level Bill

"My hon. Friend will be aware that the Bill affects my constituency. Without the Middle Level Commissioners, we would not have many homes protected and many thousands of hectares of farmland would not be kept productive. Does he agree that the key point is that if navigation, locks and waterways …..."

"Surely there are few precedents for putting in the Bill specific infrastructure service provisions such as these. Doing so would cheapen the Bill in some ways and would make the point publicly that there was not this confidence between the Middle Level Commissioners and the different boating interests. "The Bill affects my constituency along with several others, and it is vital to the people living in the fens. Without the modern drainage that was brought in during the 18th century, they would not have homes, and we would not have nearly 200,000 acres of prime agricultural land. It …..."

Written Question
Slaughterhouses: Animal Welfare
Thursday 26th October 2017

Asked by: Lord Bellingham (Conservative - Life peer)

Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what assessment he has made of the effect of mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses on animal welfare.

Answered by George Eustice

We have recently publicly consulted on our manifesto commitment that there should be mandatory CCTV recording in slaughterhouses in all areas where live animals are present. The consultation closed on 21 September and we are aiming to set out the Government’s response to the consultation in late autumn, in advance of laying secondary legislation before Parliament in early 2018.
