Question to the Department for Transport:
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what progress has been made on the electrification of the Midland Mainline; and if he will make a statement.
Answered by Claire Perry
We are pausing electrification works on Midland Mainline pending the proposals we have commissioned from Sir Peter Hendy in the autumn for how the rail upgrade programme will be carried out. On the Midland Mainline, better services can be delivered on that line before electrification using capacity and speed improvement works. The progress already made to enable the electrification of the Midland Mainline includes detailed design, bridge construction and some of the piling for overhead masts. This work will assist with our future plans for the electrification of the route.
