Speech in Commons Chamber - Wed 06 Mar 2019
Northern Ireland (Regional Rates and Energy) (No. 2) Bill

"It is a pleasure to follow the right hon. Member for East Antrim (Sammy Wilson), who, apart from the last couple of sentences, I thought made a really good, interesting speech.

I make these points very seriously. I agree with virtually every comment that has been made in the Chamber. …..."

Northern Ireland (Regional Rates and Energy) (No. 2) Bill

"That is an interesting point. The hon. Gentleman has shared with the House another important piece of information that will no doubt be reported and on which it is important that Parliament reflects. Nobody is saying this is wrong or that the Government are in a state of confusion, but …..."

Northern Ireland (Regional Rates and Energy) (No. 2) Bill

"I cannot really add to what the hon. Gentleman has said, other than to agree with it. That sums it up. Members of the public will be looking at us—they will not be distinguishing between the Government and the Opposition—and wondering how on earth we have let it come to …..."

"May I repeat what I said earlier? I agree with what the Minister is saying and this is not meant to be critical. I accept that, given the lack of a devolved Administration in Northern Ireland, we cannot scrutinise the decisions of civil servants. May I, however, ask the Minister …..."

Written Question
Police Service of Northern Ireland
Thursday 13th September 2018

Asked by: Lord Coaker (Labour - Life peer)

Question to the Northern Ireland Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, what assessment she has made of the need for additional resources for the Police Service of Northern Ireland as a consequence of the UK leaving the EU.

Answered by Shailesh Vara

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland is in regular contact with the Chief Constable about the specific and unique concerns in Northern Ireland. Policing is a devolved matter and the PSNI’s main budget is allocated by the Department of Justice from the Northern Ireland Block Grant, through the Policing Board. Whilst operational policing matters are a matter for the Chief Constable, Northern Ireland officials continue to engage with the PSNI to ensure that the case for additional resources, once finalised, is directed to the appropriate authorities for proper consideration.
