Question to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what estimate they have made of the number of employees who work for Airbus in (1) Wales, (2) Scotland, and (3) England.

Answered by Lord Henley

The number of those directly employed by Airbus will fluctuate with their programmes, but according to the company they currently employ approximately 7,400 people in Wales, 100 in Scotland and 6,500 in England.

Question to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy:

Her Majesty's Government what is their estimate of the number of workers employed in the UK in (1) the aerospace industry, and (2) the motor industry.

Answered by Lord Prior of Brampton

Based on data from the Office for National Statistics in 2016, the Aerospace industry, covering the manufacture, maintenance and repair of aircraft, directly accounted for 120,000 jobs. Automotive Manufacturing accounted for 159,000 jobs and separately recorded, the Wholesale, Retail and Repair of Motor Vehicles accounted for 634,000 jobs.

These figures cover direct employment only excluding indirect jobs that these industries may support in other sectors of the economy, through their supply chains.

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is their estimate of the total workforce employed in the UK's aerospace industry.

The ONS estimate the UK civil aerospace sector employs 116,000 people and supports a further 113,000 indirectly through its supply chains.

Question to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy:

To ask Her Majesty’s Government, in the light of the £530 million loan to Airbus in 2000 to support production of the A380 aircraft, how many of those aircraft have been purchased by UK airlines.

The repayable investment to support the development of the A380 wing and fuel system in the UK has secured over 2,000 UK jobs since the aircraft entered service in 2007.

Airbus has received 319 orders for the A380 from airline customers world-wide and have made 195 deliveries, 12 of which have been made to British Airways (part of IAG).
