Asked by: Lord Walney (Crossbench - Life peer)

Question to the Department for Work and Pensions:

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, if he will amend the point at which housing benefit payments are halted or reduced when a claimant finds work to better take account of salaries that are paid in arrears.

Answered by Steve Webb

Provisions dealing with this issue already exist within the housing benefit regulations. A claimant who has been receiving a qualifying benefit* for 26 weeks or more will continue to receive housing benefit for four weeks after they start work. Further details can be found at:

* The qualifying benefits are: Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance.
