@whippletom I disagree. There are 200 kinds of virus that cause common colds - all are mild. Mode of transmission is key. Respiratory viruses - unlike insect borne, water borne ones -- do benefit from mildness, as Ewald argued. Lockdowns may have partly prevented that happening.

.@Ayjchan and I drove our publishers mad making additions and corrections right up to the middle of September, just two months before publication, which is an unusual thing to be able to do. https://t.co/br5S5LkmMU

To paraphrase Tom Stoppard: there's nothing natural about English parkland, it's Capability Brown doing Claude doing Virgil -- doing the African savanna. How people like the landscape that's deep in our psyches. https://t.co/pKuPaPofbJ https://t.co/ov8zHRKuW2

Very interesting essay. Darwin came close to realising the Mendelian insight: "tho’ these cases are in appearance so wonderful, I do not know that they are really more so than every female in the world producing distinct male and female offspring …" https://t.co/Sa6MldCyZY

@whippletom In your excellent analysis today, you write: "If you want gills, you can’t breathe in air." Tell that to a bichir.. btw, on mildness, why did so many medics argue -- contra evo biology -- that mildness could only be a feature of human immunity, not the virus itself?

@whippletom I saw several versions of this argument (NY Times): "Will Covid-19 become milder?...most likely yes, but it may not have anything to do with the virus evolving to induce milder disease...combination of prior infections and vaccinations are building immunity in the population"

I wrote about the Theranos debacle in How Innovation Works, in a chapter called "Fakes, frauds, fads and failures". Miniaturization is not as easy in microfluidics as in semi-conducting. A transistor became more reliable as it shrank in size, a blood-diagnostic test less so.

From my 2020 book How Innovation Works. The risks run with live vaccines in the 1950s are not a reason to embrace anti-vax arguments today. MRNA vaccines carry no risk of contamination with other viruses for example. But they should not be ignored by historians. https://t.co/I9vycSo1gO https://t.co/ABaKTxgIYY
