Written Question
Yemen: Humanitarian Aid
Wednesday 20th March 2019

Asked by: Alistair Carmichael (Liberal Democrat - Orkney and Shetland)

Question to the Department for International Development:

What recent assessment she has made of the humanitarian situation in Yemen.

Answered by Alistair Burt

Yemen remains the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with 80% of the population requiring humanitarian assistance. The UK will provide £200 million of support for the coming financial year. This will feed more than a million Yemenis each month over the year, treat 30,000 children for malnutrition and provide 2 million people with improved water supply and basic sanitation.

Written Question
Darfur: Malaria
Monday 6th November 2017

Asked by: Alistair Carmichael (Liberal Democrat - Orkney and Shetland)

Question to the Department for International Development:

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what estimate her Department has made of the extent of recent increases in malaria cases in Darfur, Sudan; and what the implications of that increase are for her Department's policies in that region.

Answered by Rory Stewart

The UK Government is aware of recent reports of an increase in the number of cases of malaria in Darfur. Malaria remains a serious concern in Sudan. We will continue to contribute to the treatment of malaria (and other diseases) in Sudan through the Global Fund, a multilateral organisation which has invested nearly $33 billion in the treatment of diseases in Sudan since 2002, including malaria. In its 2017 report, the Global Fund reported that, between 2002 and 2015, the number of new malaria cases had declined by 60%, and mortality rates had declined by 62%.
