Written Question
Thursday 28th February 2019
Asked by:
Catherine West (Labour - Hornsey and Friern Barnet)
Question
to the Department for Exiting the European Union :
To ask the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, whether discussions have taken place with EU officials on the adoption of a customs union since the vote on the Withdrawal Agreement on 15 January 2019.
Answered by Robin Walker
The Government’s position on customs is as set out in the Political Declaration and we seek to further agree these proposals in the next phase of the negotiations.
The UK and the EU will put in place ambitious customs arrangements, using all facilitative arrangements and technologies, which meet the objectives and principles set out in the Political Declaration, including recognising the development of an independent trade policy by the UK beyond the economic partnership with the EU.
The Government has been clear in it's customs proposals that we want an independent trade policy, which is not possible inside a customs union.

Question
to the Department for Exiting the European Union :
To ask the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, what discussions he has had with the (a) Home Secretary b) Mayor of London, (c) Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and (d) Secretary of state for Defence on proposals for the use of UK military forces to support civilian services in the event that the UK leaves the EU without a deal.
Answered by Chris Heaton-Harris
The Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union engages regularly with Ministers from other Government departments and external stakeholders to ensure that businesses and citizens are sufficiently prepared for all eventualities. As part of cross-Whitehall preparations for a ‘no deal’ scenario, all Government departments, including the Ministry of Defence, are considering what resources are required to mitigate any potential impacts.
