Northern Ireland Protocol

"Previously, it was “limited” and “specific” and now it is operational and pragmatic—different words, but the net result is still the same. The Secretary of State touched on this in an earlier answer, but let me press him: can he confirm whether anything that the Government have proposed in the …..."

Written Question
Aerospace Industry: Northern Ireland
Wednesday 2nd December 2020

Asked by: Christian Matheson (Independent - City of Chester)

Question to the Northern Ireland Office:

What steps the Government is taking to support the aerospace sector in Northern Ireland during the covid-19 outbreak.

Answered by Robin Walker

This is clearly an uncertain time for many businesses, including those in the aerospace industry, a sector valued at over £1.8bn in Northern Ireland.

As well as the Furlough Scheme, the Government is supporting the UK’s aerospace and aviation industries with over £8.5bn in grants, loans and export guarantees. UK Export Finance is supporting £3.5bn of sales in the next 18 months, and £2.1bn has been made available through the COVID Corporate Financing Facility.

Having met recently with both management and Unite union representatives, I am pleased that Spirit and Bombardier have completed a deal that will end uncertainty for some 3,000 employees. This is a major vote of confidence in Northern Ireland’s highly skilled aerospace workforce.

Written Question
Public Expenditure: Northern Ireland
Thursday 3rd October 2019

Asked by: Christian Matheson (Independent - City of Chester)

Question to the Northern Ireland Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, what proportion of the confidence and supply agreement between the Conservative Party and Democratic Unionist Party is allocated to each constituency.

Answered by Julian Smith

Alongside the Confidence and Supply Agreement, the UK Government committed to providing £1 billion of additional funding to the Northern Ireland Departments, which is released to the Northern Ireland Grant through the usual estimates process.

The Government has so far allocated £763 million to the Northern Ireland Block Grant, including £333m for the current financial year, through Parliament’s approval in the normal estimates process.

This funding is to the benefit of all communities across the whole of Northern Ireland and is not broken down into individual constituencies.
