"The Attorney General has tried to take the high moral ground, but I have to wonder what morals were applied by the Government that led to yesterday’s Supreme Court decision. When did he first become aware that the advice given to Her Majesty the Queen, the Speaker of the House …..."Clive Efford - View Speech

Withdrawal Agreement: Legal Advice
"The Solicitor General has been pugnacious in his responses this morning, and it makes me wonder what he has to hide. Clive Efford (Labour - Eltham and Chislehurst)
Question
to the Attorney General:
To ask the Attorney General, what discussions (a) Ministers in his Department and (b) the Serious Fraud Office have had with (i) the Swiss authorities and (ii) the US Justice Department about the investigation of fraud, racketeering and money laundering at FIFA.
Answered by Robert Buckland
The Serious Fraud Office engages regularly with its overseas counterparts to discuss issues of mutual interest, but it is not appropriate to comment on such casework discussions as might take place.
It is not the practice for the Law Officers to comment upon live investigations, or to confirm or deny that Ministerial discussions about particular cases have taken place.

Question
to the Attorney General:
To ask the Attorney General, when the Serious Fraud Office first became aware that UK financial institutions may have been used to carry out illegal transactions relating to FIFA; what action was taken; and when he was first made aware of this possibility.
Answered by Robert Buckland
The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has been aware of allegations relating to FIFA for some time and has kept the situation under active review. It would not be appropriate to go into the details of those allegations.
For the SFO to open an investigation, the Director must be satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to suspect serious or complex fraud within the UK's criminal jurisdiction.
