Written Question
Employment and Support Allowance
Wednesday 15th July 2015

Asked by: Conor McGinn (Independent - St Helens North)

Question to the Department for Work and Pensions:

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, what assessment he has made of the potential effect of delays in employment and support allowance assessments on people who lose their income based benefit waiting for that assessment.

Answered by Priti Patel - Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs

Employment and Support Allowance claimants are usually paid the assessment rate of the benefit while waiting for their assessment. Where appropriate, arrears of Employment and Support allowance will be automatically backdated.

"Child poverty in St Helens is higher than the national average. Does the right hon. Gentleman think that taking in-work benefits away from working families would increase or decrease the level of child poverty in my constituency?..."
