Pleased to join new project from @ukonward alongside a great group of thinkers, writers and MP colleagues inc. @michaelgove, @ClaireCoutinho, @danny__kruger, Laura Trott, @NeilDotObrien and @John2Win My piece on what we're doing in @thetimes 👇 https://t.co/4j08GEffQ5
You're 24x more likely to become a doctor if a parent is a doctor. Fewer FSM children are admitted to degree level apprenticeships than to university (itself not a high number). And we have to stop pretending it's all the fault of Govt - or schools. My piece for @ConHome https://t.co/5k0U2dvwsy
And specifically in journalism, @FraserNelson has had great success @spectator with a no CV application process for (paid) internships which others could follow.
And in my previous life at @SocialMobilityF it was always harder to get journalists to write about this than others! But broader prob - eg 24x more likely to become a doctor if a parent is one, 17x more likely to become a lawyer, etc. So some of Lucy's ideas could be used widely.
Not uncommon to see panels for shows like Question Time and Daily Politics composed of people who are different political parties, genders and ethnicities - but feature no-one who didn't go to a private school.
Lucy right about access to politics, but access to professions more broadly a problem - and journalism one of the worst (43% private school v 29% MPs). Too many have had to do expensive MA at same London uni then do unpaid internships only to find jobs allocated via connections. https://t.co/4cLbA4COdT
I'll be backing @RishiSunak next week. He has the right combination of ability, experience and judgement to tackle the challenges the country is facing at the moment, particularly the economic challenges - as he showed during Covid and in forecasting the events of recent weeks.
The incredibly sad day we hoped would never come. The best servant to our country we'll ever see. Thank you Ma'am. Rest In Peace. https://t.co/SPMbiyd0c0
True that we don't talk about it enough. Also true we don't talk about it enough in relation to doctors (6% working class), journalists and barristers (12% working class), academics, civil service, judges, public body chairs etc etc https://t.co/c6JMqlNo8c
1 in 3 disadvantaged young people are not in education or employment 5 years after they finish their GCSEs. My take for @timesredbox on analysis by @TeachFirst today: https://t.co/kqe2qagnQI
