Written Question
Fuels: Tax Evasion
Monday 14th September 2015

Asked by: David Simpson (Democratic Unionist Party - Upper Bann)

Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what recent estimate he has made of the amount of laundered fuel moved from the Republic of Ireland to the UK each year.

Answered by Damian Hinds

No specific assessment has been made of the loss of revenue due to laundered fuel moving from the Republic of Ireland to the UK each year. However, tax gap figures published in October 2014 in the document at the link below estimates the market share for all illicit diesel in Northern Ireland as 13%, or £80M in 2012/13. Petrol fraud is negligible

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/measuring-tax-gaps

The government is committed to reducing revenue loss due to fuel duty fraud and HM Revenue and Customs works closely with the Revenue Commissioners in the Republic of Ireland and others to fight fuel fraud on a wide range of fronts.

Written Question
Economic Situation: Greece
Friday 3rd July 2015

Asked by: David Simpson (Democratic Unionist Party - Upper Bann)

Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what the potential implications for the UK economy are of Greece leaving the EU.

Answered by David Gauke

As the Chancellor has said, we should not underestimate the impact that a Greek exit from the euro area would have on the European economy – or the knock-on effects on the UK. But the economic plan we’ve pursued in Britain these last five years has increased our resilience – and we will take whatever further steps are needed to protect the UK from new risks to our economic security.

Written Question
Tobacco: Counterfeit Manufacturing
Thursday 26th March 2015

Asked by: David Simpson (Democratic Unionist Party - Upper Bann)

Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what recent steps the Government has taken to tackle the movement of counterfeit cigarettes into the UK.

Answered by Priti Patel - Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs

HMRC’s strategy to tackle tobacco smuggling has reduced the tax gap for cigarettes from 22% in 2000/01 to 10% in 2013/14.

HMRC and Border Force have just published a new joint strategy that sets out a comprehensive range of activity, overseas, at the border and within the UK, to tackle the threat from smuggling of genuine and counterfeit illicit tobacco products.

The strategy can be accessed on the HMRC website:

Tourism Industry and VAT

"Across the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, our golf clubs provide fantastic accommodation and food, but there is a distortion of VAT payments between proprietary clubs and member-run clubs. Surely that anomaly should be addressed. Doing so would create more employment and would be good for tourism...."

Tourism Industry and VAT

"Earlier, I raised the issue of the distortion of VAT payments between certain golf clubs—the disparity between the proprietary clubs and the member-run clubs. Surely that disparity should not exist. If it is a golf club, it is a golf club, and there should be a level playing field. Golf …..."
